The Gravel Grovel is the perfect end to a perfect season. This year's race was the finale for the American UltraCross Championship Race Series and we were proud to have our course as the deciding factor for series winners!
Nearly 300 individuals participated in either the 62 mile race or 20 mile fun ride leaving once again from the Midwest Trail Ride Horseman's Camp and Outpost in Norman, Indiana. While our hills may not seem like much for our first-time, out-of-state guests; their persistence, steep grade and fresh laid gravel can give even our toughest competitors a challenge.
This year the Gravel Grovel added new challenges to the course in hopes of evening the playing field between the cyclocross and mountain bike riders. Along with incorporating a few new climbs - including two of the steepest climbs in the state! - several miles of the "old school" style Nebo Ridge trail were also added to the route. Flat tires and busted egos were the most common downfall for this year's event, but folks will know next year that fresh laid gravel = many a flat tire in the Hoosier National!
Congratulations to all the division and series winners. We thank you all for coming to the 5th annual event and we look forward to seeing you all again in 2014. And while there were many great write ups from the race, only a few can be from the perspective of those who were fighting for the win...
